HUMP-DAY HUNK -- Javier Bardem

Current read: Pirate Tycoon, Forbidden Baby by Janette Kenny

I've had Spanish hotties on the mind (a book idea's churning...) and there's something about Javier's smoldering dark looks that does it for me. As I was researching photos of this forty year old Oscar winner, I found him channeling George Clooney, Robert Downey, Jr. and Antonio Banderas in different poses. Pretty amazing. Can you imagine him whispering Spanish endearments in your ear while that dark stubble scrapes your cheeks?

Ay, yi, yi, yi, yi...

MONDAY'S HERO -- Morgan from The Parlor House Daughter

Current read: The Naked Baron by Sally MacKenzie

I'm back! Had a wonderful time on the Harley ride to Red River, New Mexico. Today I'm thrilled to welcome my chaptermate, Joanne Sundell. Joanne writes western historicals, which you all know I love. Her third published novel, The Parlor House Daughter, is set primarily in 1880 Denver. It's a moving tale of an unlikely romance between a woman born into the world of prostitution and an affluent young man.

Welcome, Joanne! Tell us about yourself.

My “passion” is traditional, old-fashioned romance, hooked on the genre from my very first read of the quintessential romance novel, JANE EYRE. I’m ever drawn to the Victorian Era primarily because it had to be extremely difficult for women … and men … to express any sexuality openly. Women were taught to disdain sex while men were cautioned against foisting themselves on their wives, seeking their sexual pleasures elsewhere.

Of my six historical romances from Five Star-Gale, Cengage Learning, the first four are set in colorful, turbulent Colorado while the remaining two (a series) are set in Civil War, Virginia.

With my three children grown and off on their own adventures, my husband and I live part-time in Colorado and California with our entourage` of huskies and kitty kats. I retain memberships in Romance Writers of America, Colorado Romance Writers, Los Angeles Romance Writers, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and Women Writing the West.

I loved The Parlor House Daughter. The emotion between Becca and Morgan was breathtaking, and the history of prostitution in Colorado is interesting without being overwhelming. How did you come up with the idea?

I always discover my hero and heroine, and their subsequent plot development, while doing research. Historicals are my passion and I enjoy diving into research and discovering the love story, long hidden. The moment I read that in 1880 Denver, along a six block stretch of what is now Market Street, over one thousand prostitutes “worked the line,” I was hooked on finding out more about these women and how they survived such a dangerous, troubled lifestyle. Of course, the next question was just who the customers might be, especially in the “top of the line” parlor houses. This led me to find my hero, a member of the wealthy, elite class in More than cultures clashed when Morgan met Rebecca Rose at the Palace, the fanciest parlor house in Denver.

Blurb:
Bound by birth to the world of prostitution, Rebecca Rose is born in a pine shack, a crib, at the end of the line in Nevada City, Colorado Territory, in the mining town’s red-light district. Bound by birth to uphold his family’s good name and sizable fortune, Morgan larkspur is born in Denver City with a silver spoon in his mouth and iron spurs on his heels. Their lives intersect in 1880 Denver when Becca is seventeen and Morgan, twenty-five. Immediately attracted, they’ve no idea of the high price they’ll pay for this—the danger awaiting.

A child of four when “hell came calling,” Becca determines to grow up and seek her own justice for what her mother suffered. The law won’t help a whore. She’d do what she needed to stay alive, knowing she’d never live happily ever after as in fairytales, yet never ashamed of what she was. When Morgan steps inside room number eight at the Palace behind the beautiful, untried prostitute, looking for nothing more than a pleasant distraction, he unwittingly sets in motion a series of events neither could have imagined in their worst nightmare.

The Parlor House Daughter is a suspenseful, romantic page-turner, set against the backdrop of hustle and bustle, gold-and-silver-rich Denver, where fortunes change hands often and misfortune befalls many.

We're all about the hero here, and Morgan is a fantastic one. Tell us about him.

Morgan is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome. He's strong, sexual, and sensitive, a combination easily melting any woman’s heart. Born into wealth, Morgan carries the burden of maintaining the family name on his shoulders, feeling unconditional loyalty to his family and their financial holdings in banking and mining. He’s smart and capable, ever looking out for his less responsible and party-going little brother. Morgan isn’t looking for love but only making a match that will suit his upstanding family and their good name. He most certainly isn’t looking to befriend a young prostitute and find any kind of lasting relationship with someone from the Row!

How do he and Becca get together?

Morgan is intrigued with Rebecca Rose from the first moment he sees her serving champagne to customers at the Palace. He’s so intrigued that he sets up an evening with her at the Palace. More than her shyness and her natural beauty, he’s taken aback at how she actually “listens” to him. No woman, not his mother, not his fiancĂ©, ever really bothers to listen. Rebecca is not focused on herself as most women in his life appear to be. Like Morgan, Rebecca is surprised that she’s immediately attracted to Morgan. She hates men and sees them only as a way of earning money—money she needs to stay in Denver and find her mother’s killer. She’s not looking for love and knows she’ll hate having her “first customer” touch her. But … when Morgan’s hand grazes hers … all of her fear and hate of men disappears, replaced by budding desire.

Who or what was your inspiration for Morgan?

Morgan is a composite of the rugged, pioneering spirit in Colorado history. He represents the successful businessmen that brought valuable ore out of the ground and turned it into rich profit. He’s a member of the social elite, but doesn’t hold himself above anybody else. In fact, he stands up for the common man at every opportunity. There was money to be made in Colorado and Morgan’s character grew out of this entrepreneurial spirit.

Are there any celebrities who capture the look of your hero?

I was a huge fan of Deadwood, a series than ran on HBO, set in 1876. Everything from the sets to the characters to the action seemed “spot-on” to me of the real West. The moment I saw Seth Bullock’s character (played by the actor Timothy Olyphant) I saw a lot of Morgan Larkspur in him. Seth is sexy, seductive, smart, and exudes a quiet strength that I always sensed in Morgan.

What a great model for Morgan! What projects are you working on now

Right now I’m focused on marketing my latest release, MEGGIE’S REMAINS, and then need to focus on my Civil War series, THE QUAKER AND THE CONFEDERATE~Hearts Divided (out next May) and Hearts Persuaded (out next September). My backlist includes MATCHMAKER, MATCHMAKER (1/06), A…MY NAME’S AMELIA (3/07), THE PARLOR HOUSE DAUGHTER (12/08), MEGGIE’S REMAINS (7/09), AND THE QUAKER AND THE CONFEDERATE (Hearts Divided 5/10, Hearts Persuaded 9/10. I invite you to visit my website, www.joannesundell.com, to find out more about me and my writing. I also can be found at www.myspace.com/joannesundell.

Joanne, thank you for being here. I know everyone will love Morgan and The Parlor House Daughter as much as I did!

Excerpt:

I’ll be damned, Morgan thought. He believed what Miss Jenny told him now about the brunette beauty. This beauty was untried. When he’d first approached the famous madam about the girl in question, never once did he actually believe the girl hadn’t worked as a prostitute before. Now he did. No tried prostitute would be reciting the speech he’d just heard, using about as much seduction as a schoolteacher reciting multiplication tables. Whoa. Now Morgan doubted his wisdom in asking for this appointment. He wasn’t interested in spoiling any young woman, prostitute or otherwise. He didn’t want to be anyone’s “first.” No matter that this girl took his breath with her looks and her shy ways. He remembered she’d been shy before, barely looking at him. Now anything but shy, she seemed to have no trouble at all lashing out at him.

Becca’s customer towered over her, looming now like a great black predator, trying to decide if it liked its prey or not. She hated this. Nothing was going right! She’d done her best to be alluring and seductive, and Morgan Larkspur only laughed at her! She couldn’t fail at this. She just couldn’t. Too much depended on her being a successful prostitute at the Palace.

Gulping once, then again, she forced herself to calm. “Mr. Larkspur, please, won’t you sit? Surely you would enjoy some wine.” She strained to recapture the moment, taking a seat herself, nervously smoothing the folds of her gown.

"Morgan,” he corrected. “Or Spur, if you like.” He took a seat next to the nervous girl. “Most everyone calls me Spur.” This wasn’t going to be easy: getting out of his appointment. He didn’t want to hurt the girl’s feelings.

Relaxing a little, Becca turned her head slightly, yet didn’t look at him.” Morgan,” she repeated in a soft voice.

"And which is it with you?” He tried to make polite conversation. “Are you Becca or Rebecca?”

"Everyone calls me Becca,” she responded, staring at her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

"Then I’ll call you Rebecca. It’s a beautiful name. Your mother’s?” he asked, before catching himself. He’d no call to ask a prostitute about her family. At once uneasy, Morgan shifted in his seat.

HUMP-DAY HUNK -- Jessie Pavelka

Current read: The Naked Baron by Sally Mackenzie

Don't you love it when they smile? Dark and brooding does it for me every time, but there's nothing quite like a hottie with a grin on his face. Jessie looks genuinely happy to be, well, Jessie. And why shouldn't he be? He's gorgeous. The star of Lifetime's Diet Tribe is a personal trainer, nutritionist, and fitness model. Though he lives in Los Angeles, he's a native Texan and is a graduate of The University of North Texas. Brains and brawn? Be still my heart...

MONDAY'S HERO -- Tor from Bestial Cravings

Current read: Seductress of Caralon by Lacey Alexander

I'm back! We had a great vacation, and I'll blog more about it soon. For now, please help me welcome paranormal author Dayana Knight, a good friend I met through our mutual association with The Wild Rose Press. Her current release, Bestial Cravings, had a wild ride on the TWRP bestseller list.

Welcome, Dayana! Tell us about Bestial Cravings.

Like many of my stories, the inspiration for this one has a colorful and strange history. Actually, the piece that set me rolling on Bestial Cravings was a contest entry several years ago. The submission guideline for the story was a complete 1000 word story and the clincher, you had to chose one of several sentences to write your story around. You also had to use that line as the first sentence of your story.

Thus, The Changeling, which later became Bestial Cravings, was born. Although the story didn’t place in the final rounds, it did make it to round two of the judging.

Anyhoo, I was perusing my files of stories, unfinished pieces, etc. and came across TC and thought, let me see what I can do with this one.

Blurb:

Vesta Johns has everything going for her—except her health. Desperate to find the answers to her lethargy and her insatiable desire for raw meat and sex, she seeks out the help of her doctor, but Dr. Cohen can give her no answers.

Or can she?

Torrence Simiene is a medical consultant with a unique specialization. As an alpha werewolf, it’s been his job to aid Dr. Cohen’s distinctive patients through their transition from human to shifter, for years. This time, however, it’s different. Vesta arouses his primal lust, and he’s having a hard time keeping her at a distance.

Will the doctor’s plan of care offer the ultimate cure for Tor and Vesta’s bestial cravings , or further drive them apart?

You know I love those Alpha wolves ;). Tell us about Tor.

Tor is determined, strong, alpha type no nonsense male until he meets Vesta. He is tall, well-muscled and lean. He has sandy, shoulder-length hair, hazel eyes and rugged clean-shaved good looks.

Very sexy! Tor is the first Alpha I've read who doesn't have dark hair. How is he drawn to his heroine, Vesta?

His profession at first, then he senses a strong pull of lust and need. His inner beast will not stand down when she is around, neither will another body part.

LOL! What draws her to him?

An insatiable lust as well, though Vesta has no idea why. She isn’t prudish though doesn’t sleep with just anyone but Tor puts her libido over the edge. The desire he awakens in her is new and frightening to her.

Who inspired Tor?

He basically just happened, though I love lean, muscled alpha males (grin). The sexier the better, the hotter…well you get the picture.

I hear you on the sexier and hotter the better ;). Is there a little bit of someone you know in him?

I’ll let you know when I meet him.

LOL, yes, please do! And introduce us ;). Are there any celebrities who capture his look?

Not really. I peruse magazines and stock photos. I save pics of hotties much like someone you may know, Helen. But I will share a secret with you. I do and have for many years been drawn to Viggo Mortensen. His many faces could inspire a multitude of heros.

I love Viggo! He was my first "hunk over forty" last year ;).
What projects are you working on right now?

I am currently working on Book II of the Roma Wolf Tales series. Bestial Cravings actually is a companion short to the series. I also have several other novels in different stages as well as another erotic short in the works.

I have submitted my first novel, a crime suspense, which I’d pulled in December from the original publishing house when my contract was up, to The Wild Rose Press and await their thoughts on picking it up for republication.

How can readers keep up with your work?

They can visit me at my blog (http://www.dayanaknight.blogspot.com/ ) or website (http://www.romawolftales.com/ ) Also, I’ve just unveiled my debut newsletter, Dayana’s Happenings, this month. See my blog for how you can sign up for this and future copies.

Fun question – what is the strangest, most surreal thing you’ve ever done?

Hmm…This isn’t really anything I’ve done but rather something that happened to me―today, as a matter of fact. I was gazing out my front window and noticed, to my distress, a bluejay lying on the ground just outside the boundary of my garden. It lay flat out on its back and I even noticed the breeze move its poor tail feathers. I stared a moment then went out to the garage to get a shovel and proceeded to go outside via the garage door to bury the bird. I stepped outside to the place I’d seen the bluejay and stood with shovel in hand befuddled. The bird was gone!

It was there and the position in which it appeared most definitely dead. I stood for long minutes trying to figure it out but then turned, went back into my garage, put the shovel away and back into the house. I stood for some time staring out my front window at the spot I’d seen the ‘dead’ bird. I’m not sure what happened but somehow the episode seems an omen. I only hope it is a good one!

I'm sure it's a good omen ;). In fact, I bet you could build a story around that event! Thanks so much for being here today, Dayana! Readers, here's a taste of Bestial Cravings (warning, adult content):

“I’d better go, Vesta.”

She turned toward him, disappointment tightened her lovely face as she stood. Tor followed her lead as she walked toward the door.

“I had a really nice evening. Thank you,” She said softly with a sad little smile.

Impulse made him pull her into his arms.

“Why so sad, Little One?”

“I don’t want tonight to end.” Vesta whispered and pressed against him. His arousal pulsed and sent a rush of heat through him. She turned her face up to him, and he bent to her lips with a hunger he’d never known. His erection twitched and jumped. And the entity within him thrashed. He couldn’t hold the beast much longer, the lust for her was too strong.

Tor ran his hands up her back and tangled his fingers in her hair pulling her head back. “Vesta, I want to take you now, but we can’t do this. There are things you need to know first.”

“I want you…”

“Vesta!” Tor set her away from him. “We can’t.”

“Why?” She turned heated eyes to him. “I know you want me.” She stroked her hand over his cock. “I want to feel this inside me, Tor.”

He grabbed her hand from his throbbing crotch and moaned, “Oh God.” His breath swooshed out, and he rolled his head back. I have to stop this now. “I’ve got to go. I’m sorry, Vesta. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

Tor opened the door and stepped outside. When he stood a safe distance down the sidewalk he said, “I promise, Little One, you will understand soon enough.” Then he did the hardest thing he’d ever done in his life.

He walked away.
